Great post! And very, very true.
Those stupid PC guys just don’t get it. And those Linux losers…wow, they should be….
Just kidding!

Well said. I’ll stick with my PC’s, even though I’m tempted now more then ever to buy one for school. I mean, who doesn’t want a free iPod with a Macbook purchase?!?

“And most of us become unpaid marketers for two of the largest corporations in the world.”
I don’t like the feeling of being pinned as a Mac evangelist. I am not one. I just happen to use one and people have a tendency to ask me questions about it. Lots of people.
My usual answer is “it works for me” and then if I’m really feeling like avoiding being labeled as a trendy mac lover, then I will mention that I actually have to have one for my graphic design work.
I agree that everyone uses a computer differently. I’m proficient in Windows and in OSX. I use both and own both but I always gravitate to my mac. Now I’m a little tired of holding back my appreciation for this finely crafted piece of equipment and the operating system and software that let me run it and do things with incredible ease.
Sure, there is a lot of gray in this debate. And you’re right, it is kind of pointless to take sides (and infuriating when someone takes a side but has never spent much time using the other system.)
But when a guy in a coffeeshop, a little old lady, or a member of my family mention to me that they’ve been “thinking about getting a mac” I’m just happy to hear that they are adventurous enough to investigate what else is out there in the computer world. So maybe they got enticed by some exagerated marketing campaign, but at least they are a little more open minded than the average dude.

The question is not a technical one (though undoubtedly Windows is the worst of the lot technically :) )
The question is one of freedom. It is somewhat akin to choosing to live in a country run by a dictator, or choosing to live in a country run by democracy.
If you prefer democracy there is really only one choice - Linux.
(OK, the BSD and OpenSolaris people will dispute that, but it sounded better that way.)

Well 5 years ago we wouldn’t even be having this discussion, because microsoft owned eveything. When people thought about the word computer all they thought was PC. Which still could be argued. But now Apple is gaining ground in usage and in turn is allowing Apple to be placed in new sales areas like Best Buy and Circuit City which used to be strictly PC lands.
However the beautiful thing about all of this is that now there is a choice to be made and choices mean competition for these major companies. Which in turn means more marketing but it also usually means better prices and deals for the consumer, in order to attract business.
I agree that Operating Systems are “to each his own” but 5 years ago OSX, Mac and Apple were not the household names that they are today. Also I don’t think Linux is quite a household name yet but I could see it get there in another 5 years.
I will say this though… its absolutely amazing how many people I talk to lately that want tips or advice because they have made the switch from PC to Mac. It’s going to be a lot of fun to watch the computer market over the next 5 to 10 years.
