OT: Cars I wish I hadn’t sold
I wish I hadn’t sold my very first car, a 1970 MGB GT. The MG wasn’t a stellar interstate traveler—-no overdrive—-but it was my in-town joy. And my British car show joy. 16-year-old kids really shouldn’t have whatever they want in a first car. But in my case, the car I really wanted was $1,500. I remember praying for this car one Sunday night prior to my sixteenth birthday. The next night, it was sitting in my backyard, a surprise from my parents and an answered prayer for a materialistic (and yet conservative-minded) teenager. Still, I always viewed the MG as a little “love from above.” Thanks again Mom and Dad. :) I just wish I hadn’t sold it.
I wish I hadn’t sold that silver 1992 Honda Prelude Si. My first true sports, the Prelude was such a dream to drive. The manual gear shift was so smooth. I’ll never forget how great this car felt while driving. Sensitive enough to make it feel like a sports and smooth enough to make it feel luxurious. This was a car ahead of its time. And the 4th gen Prelude is still beautiful by design—-even compared to the latest automotive design trends. I just wish I hadn’t sold it.
I wish I hadn’t sold my 1991 MR2 Turbo in steel grey mist. This car moved. And when it moved, it did so quickly. The T-top gave a whole new dimension to every season. A few engine mods kept life exciting, but probably contributed to the blown head gasket that led to the sale of the car. I repaired the gasket, but felt like a turbocharged car (with 10+ years of strong use) might create additional dents in my budget, so I sold it. Now, I just wish I hadn’t.

David,
Man, I feel ya on this one!
My 1996 Mazda B2000 pickup was sweet! Nearly perfect condition when I got it, really low miles. I had such dreams for that truck! Back in the day when lowriders were all the buzz in the good old midwest….ahhh memories!

I can almost hear Barbra Streisand singing in the background! (Yuck!) Anyway, I can honestly say that every vehicle I got rid I was happy to see it go. So I can’t feel your pain on this one. Now guitars - that’s a different story.

I feel your pain. I think I must have a sick, strange relationship with the cars I have owned. Looking back, I wish I would have kept most of them. My first car was 1977 Toyota Corolla, it was indestructible, fun car. Then my 1985 Toyota pickup is the one vehicle I owned the longest and I wish I still had it, it got me thru college and beyond. My 1995 GMC Jimmy was sweet, it was fully loaded, I owned it about 5 years, but the engine finally gave out right before I was getting ready to sell it. :( I had already bought a Toyota Corolla as my Jimmy replacement, it was a fun car since it was a 5 speed, but beyond that it was just a plain, boring, economical car. It was a sad day a year and a half ago when it was totalled, due to hydroplaning in the rain.
Every time I sell a car or get rid of one due tragedy (hydroplane), it’s like I lose a part of me. Is that abnormal?

Tony: I think people who modify cars have a particular disposition to car fever. :)
Dolan: Oh, don’t get me started on lost guitars. Thankfully, I only have one loss, but it sure is a story. Wow. You’re so good at inspiring future blog entries. :)
Brad: WOW! So close to my B. Of course, my model was a left-hand drive US spec car. But, other than the trailer hitch :) and biscuit interior—-mine was black—-that car looks just like mine. Ack! I miss it. :)
Jim: Nope. I guarantee it’s not abnormal. I can also guarantee that your wife will have a tough time understanding the man-and-machine connection. :)

I regret selling…
Wait, no, I blew the engine up in both of my cars, so they weren’t so much sold as they were scrapped…
Maybe at the end of the year I can buy a car I’ll regret selling someday. Let’s hope so anyway.
