T-Mobile Dash

In the following article, I describe acquiring Internet access on my Dash handset with no data plan, free of charge and without restriction. Since then, several kind folks have added to this discussion. Also, I have experienced an outage in my data access that spurred a phone conversation with T-Mobile. In this conversation, new information has come to light regarding a glitch in the way data-enabled phones from T-Mobile interact with the network. Apparently, some phones are granted untethered access to the Internet for short periods of time due to a glitch in the system. Read more…

On the way back from our holiday excursion to the South, I left my not-so-beloved Motorola RAZR in a brown cab. Since there are thousands of brown cabs in DC and hundreds of cab companies, I decided to forego the search for it altogether and find a new phone instead. The contract was up on my RAZR and the insured replacement had a $70 deductible. New contract aside, I’m not paying $70 for another RAZR. The front screen went out after three months of use forcing me to have to open the phone to reveal the identity of callers. And the battery life was pathetic, at best. (Just so you know my beef with the thing.)

The Process

For a brief time, I considered a phone company switch. Verizon has great service here, but I’ve always had issues with their poor customer service. They even have poor sales initiative; I spoke to a lady by phone who wanted nothing to do with me when I asked her some questions about Verizon’s proprietary phone operating systems which are renowned for slowing down their devices. I just wanted to know if they had any “clean” phones. And that’s not the first time I’ve been rushed off the phone by a Verizon salesperson. It seems like they want the consumer who calls and immediately purchases something, not the consumer who has questions before purchasing. And, honestly, I just didn’t feel like pursuing anyone else right now. So, I decided to give T-Mobile one more year. Their network coverage of my life isn’t superb, but we have a great plan at a great rate and their customer service has always been good enough for me. They’ve even credited us a few times on issues where our bill was a bit high (and our fault).

I knew I wanted a smartphone or PocketPC. After doing some research, I liked the Treo line, the Motorola Q, the Blackberry Pearl and this phone they called the T-Mobile Dash. I lined the four (active) phones up in the store and gave them all a good thrashing. The Treo was pretty hot, but also expensive. The Q was okay, but I was still so depressed from my RAZR experience that I couldn’t bring myself to really like it. I also had issues with the overall feel and layout of the phone. The Q didn’t seem natural. The Blackberry was nice and priced to move, too. It was a tough call there. Once I got my hands on the Dash, though, I was very, very pleased. This phone felt right in my hands and I actually liked the layout of things. The OS seemed snappy enough and I was surprised at the $149 price tag. (That price was with a two-year contract renewal, but the T-Mobile agent, Taon,  at 15th and H St NW, gave me that price at a one-year renewal on a new “customer loyalty” pricing scheme. Fine by me.)

I asked Taon lots of questions about the Dash and he answered them all pretty well. Then I found out that it was the phone he had used since it arrived in the smartphone line a few months ago. So I also got his perspective on “a few months down the road.” And he really wasn’t trying to sell me on any one phone, I really think I had already sold myself. (The Engadget review was positive.) Taon really gave a nice overview of what they had that could meet my needs, voice and data, and I appreciated that.

I bought the Dash.

When I got home, I unraveled the packaging and loaded my new SIM card in. (The other bummer of a lost phone is a lost SIM card.) Luckily, I had a backup of my old data as of about a month before the loss. I probably have about 99% of my data, which is quite good. There was no easy way of importing a CSV (Excel) file, so I went ahead and imported my content manually. (I really didn’t spend much time looking for an easy way for the import.) Because the Dash will sync with a PC or server, I just added my contacts to my Exchange list and synced the phone with my laptop to build my phone’s contact list. I’ve been meaning to get more of my personal contacts into my Outlook contacts for awhile. Perfect excuse for it. Now I have a beautiful system of data management. If I add a contact to my phone, it appears on my PC and vice-versa. It’s not exactly a new thing, but boy do I love it now that I can do it. It’s really, really nice.

The Phone

For the past few weeks, I’ve put the phone through it’s paces.

It has wi-fi, easily my favorite feature. I’ve never had any problems with the wi-fi and I’m almost always on a broadband connection (work and home both wi-fi enabled.)

It has T-Mobile EDGE, which is their answer to EVDO and other “broadband”-like mobile connectivity. It’s free, so I love that. And I use EDGE all the time when I’m out and about or not on a wi-fi network. I can browse the web, send and receive email (IMAP sync), and download data. Tonight, I downloaded an MP3 of the latest episode of This Week in Tech when I forgot to bring along my Nano for a drive out to Tyson’s Corner. It was an 8MB file and it downloaded in about six minutes. That’s not bad considering I was driving 70 (I mean, 55) miles per hour down I-66 at the time. (Not that driving really affects EDGE, I just think it’s way cool.)

It takes pretty decent pictures and the camera feature is much faster than my RAZR. It stores images quickly and lets me get on to the next shot. It’s no digital SLR, of course. But for a camera phone, it works quite well.

The Dash has Windows Mobile, so I’ve loaded a couple of cool apps and made good use of some default ones:

  • I’m chatting with Skype Mobile and even making phone calls over the Skype network when I’m connected via wi-fi. I had a 20-minute call with my dad the night I brought home the phone. So it’s stable, too. (I haven’t tried a Skype call on EDGE. I’m not sure it would work—probably sketchy at best.)
  • I’m browsing with Opera Mobile, though I’m on a beta build and I’ve encountered a few quirks that forced me back to IE. I hope to find something better from Opera or (hopefully) Mozilla. I had better luck with Opera Mini on my RAZR.
  • Though the phone does calendaring, contacts and tasks all by default, simply using these features improves the value of the phone for me.
  • The default IM application also works well enough. I use it for AIM only, though I can also log in to ICQ, which might be handy if I knew someone on ICQ.
  • The media player seems okay. I’d always love to see something like VLC mobile. I haven’t tried any video yet.

All of the features I’ve mentioned are pretty broad. The Dash is really quite feature-full without getting in your way. I dig that. It’s slim and light which makes is pleasantly portable. At times, I can almost “miss” that I have it on me. And it works well all the way around. I don’t have any serious complaints. My wife, Missy, does have to keep me in check on it every now and then, but I haven’t allowed “work” email on it, so it only receives mail to my personal address. Though my tasks and calendar reflect work items, at least I’m not in demand via email.

The verdict on the Dash: I dig it. Dot-dash.

I like the phone a lot, as well.  I was stunned, however, when I realized that it didn’t come with any sort of memo-making utility.  Nothing.  That seems a little cheap/stupid for a device with qwerty.  As well, I hate the default browser.

After coming from an 8700g, I really wasn’t interested in feeling as if I’d downgraded in any specific area.  However, that’s kind of subjective, as the BB’s browser natively supports Java scripting and or full HTML.  In effect, making the “internet” look a little primitive on the Dash—Opera Mobile solved this, however.

Though the BlackBerry is reasonably featureless, what it does, well, it doest it very, very well.  I’m liking the Dash a lot, but it will take some getting used to, I suppose.

I just gotmy Dash as well. I loveit so farfor the most part, but am also puzzled by the lack of note taking, and the inability to copy and paste text within and between applications.

Also, how do figure free EDGE? You can get the t-mobile internet or the cheaper t-mobile web, but those are not free.

yirm: EDGE is enabled by default, just as the normal GSM is already on. It could be possible that EDGE is not provided in your metro area, but I am not certain of the standard on this. In particular, I don’t know if T-Mobile puts EDGE on all their cell networks, or just particular metro areas. EDGE works for me all over DC and I’ve never experience an EDGE outage in 100 mile radius of the city or anywhere else I’ve traveled to (southeast U.S.) since I got my Dash. I have a feeling EDGE works anywhere.

    “I’m browsing with Opera Mobile..”

Are you using Opera Mobile for SP 2003? or?
The Dash is a WM5 device and there is no Opera Mobile for WM5 SP edition.

ecks2: Yep. As it turns out, Opera managed to install and I was able to get around enough in testing to believe it worked fine. But it did not work fine at all. In the long term it was quite buggy and it was evident that the app was designed for a different platform, seemingly PocketPC.

I browse on the Dash using IE because I’ve yet to find an alternative.

Well yes there is a Pocket PC version (touchscreen devices):

    http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/products/winmobileppc/

and the Windows Mobile (in this case for 2003 edition):

    http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/products/winmobile/

The later I was not able to install on a WM5 SP device (not a Dash).

So which were you using? What ‘bugs’ exactly? Perhaps you were using the touchscreen edition??

Also what do you mean by:

“It has T-Mobile EDGE, which is their answer to EVDO and other “broadband”-like mobile connectivity. It’s free, so I love that.”

Edge isn’t free, nor is it 3G (as EVDO), its considered 2.75G HSDPA (only on Cingular in NA for now Tmo is supposed to launch it this year 2007) however.

By free do you mean unlimited? Just about every carrier has unlimited data plans in North America now.

ecks2: I tried the Opera Windows Mobile edition (.cab) and experienced problems navigating to fields, including the address bar, as well as input conflicts with Opera accepting numbers on my number keys rather than the letters that are dually assigned to them. I did ensure that my input mode was for standard typing and yet Opera still would not insert letters.

T-Mobile EDGE is not necessarily “broadband”, but I view EDGE as an interesting answer to other carriers’ pricey data plans, like EVDO. Though EDGE may not have the same speed as EVDO, the price point is amazing. When I said “free”, that’s exactly what I meant. I pay nothing extra for EDGE access. It’s limited to about 150kbps in bandwidth, but I can live with that, especially given that sweet price point. It is also unlimited. I have never been billed for an overage or had a limit placed on my connectivity. It’s always on, 24/7.

    Here’s a direct quote from T-Mobile:

T-Mobile’s EDGE enhanced data network provides fast and easy access to Internet information on the go. There is no added cost for EDGE service. Customers seamlessly drop back to GPRS when not in EDGE coverage areas or when EDGE coverage is not available.

“I tried the Opera Windows Mobile edition (.cab)”

Ok but to that extent the TWO different versions (PPC and SP) would be the same!

” and experienced problems navigating to fields, including the address bar, as well as input conflicts with Opera accepting numbers on my number keys rather than the letters that are dually assigned to them. I did ensure that my input mode was for standard typing and yet Opera still would not insert letters.”

This really sounds like you indeed had the WM5 version (hence PPC and NOT the correct SP edition) there really is no WM5 Smartphone edition available yet Opera has addressed this issue a number of times in their forums, BUT I just ran into this (and as I do not have a Dash here right now I can’t try it) but this would be something worth while trying!!

    http://www.modaco.com/Wm5-fix-for-Opera-80-smartphone-t243966.html

It would require to download THIS version:
    http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/products/winmobile/

Also most likely your Dash has a date stamp as to when you initially installed the other version of Opera from which the 30day (or 14day) would have started to be counted from!

“T-Mobile EDGE is not necessarily “broadband”, but I view EDGE as an interesting answer to other carriers’ pricey data plans, like EVDO.”

Yes indeed and as for myself is sufficient for what I need, but at the same time not really in the same boat as EVDO :)

“When I said “free”, that’s exactly what I meant. I pay nothing extra for EDGE access.”

Tmobile has no such offer AFAIK, they have Tmobile interenet (with hotspots) and also Tzones (which is not supposed to be used for “everything” but works for most applications) but both of those have a MONTHLY fee $6 and $30 is it? Either way I am confused as to your “sweet price” and free comments, EDGE is NOT free in any form or fashion with Tmo, and if you are indeed accessing Edge on your Dash via Tmo, don’t be suprised if you get billed on it later, or perhaps you have an unlimited plan and are not aware of it??

Either way I’d be VERY curious to hear if the Opera would work with that trick linked to above! The CORRECT version of Opera that is :)

What are you trying to point out with the Tmo quote? Yes EDGE (or EGPRS) is just the next level of GPRS (software enhancement really) but not even GPRS is free, it goes under the same datapackage.

    Here is the pricing:
    http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/plans/Default.aspx?plancategory=7

There are a number of plans I’ll try to list them in order:
$20/mo when adding data to a Sidekick with voiceplan
$29.99/mo when using a Sidekick for data ONLY
$39.99/mo when adding data to a voiceplan
$49.99/mo for data only sim card, be it in a laptop or phone

Then there are other special packages too, the $39.99 and $49.99 includes unlimted Tmobile WiFi hotspots btw!

Here is some info on the $6/mo Tzones:
    http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/addons/services/TzonesGroup.aspx?tp=Svc_Tab_TZones

There you can also btw access the INTERNET and EMAIL package info!

ecks2: Here’s what I am saying. I am with T-Mobile. I pay for a monthly “phone” plan only. I do not have a “data” plan and do not pay anything extra beyond my normal monthly phone plan charges.

The Dash is an EDGE-enabled phone. I have an icon in my status bar that says “E” that tells me when I am on the EDGE network. (It says “G” when I only have GPRS access.) When I am on the EDGE network, I can browse the Web, send and receive email, sync my phone to Exchange and even provide Internet access to my laptop through the phone. It’s wide open. Again, I simply do not pay for this service. I only pay for a “normal” phone plan and specifically opted not to purchase an extra data plan from T-Mobile. As I understand it, those plans would give a more broadband-like connectivity and may offer additional functionality, but I am content with 150kbps always-on connection that is 100% free, adding no additional cost to my existing phone plan.

I quoted the page on T-Mobile to illustrate that this very base data package is free—“no added cost”. They do not present this to customers that often (or that clearly) because they want to sell them on larger data plans. But if you dig long enough and ask the right questions, you will learn of this very cool, very free data option from T-Mobile.

Where do you read ‘no added cost’? Also that would only refer to that there is no charge per kb that its a flatrate charge.

There is no such dataplan by Tmo as a FREE one, at any datarate. You’re either getting charged for Tzones or have a billing error that will catch up with you.

ecks2: Yes, there are data plans available and yes they do add additional cost to your bill. However, T-Mobile offers basic Internet access for free on phones that allow it. This is not a data plan of any sort. It is a default basic access to the Internet on capable phones.

Read this article from T-Mobile. Perhaps that’s clear enough.

I won’t argue that there isn’t a glitch involved here. Perhaps that is the case. But in any event, I believe T-Mobile is stating clearly that I am granted access to the Internet at no additional cost. The article in the link above literally states: “T-Mobile gives default access to each of our customers free of charge.”

David, sorry to beat the issue to death, but I believe you are misunderstanding the article you mention. The next sentence is “This [free] access gives you the ability to download content such as ringtones, wallpapers, and Javaâ„¢ games.”  Basically, the only internet access that is free, is to go to their online store, and buy stuff from them.

Of course, they want this to be free, so that you’ll spend money.

However, there has been a lot of debate over whether you can receive unlimited data using the “T-Zones” plan, which is only $5.99/month.  Apparently this is meant to only allow you to access a very limited “T-Zones” WAP browser, but there was a way to set your proxy settings so that you can use a full web browser.  Check out the “T-Mobile” forum at howardforums.com.  However, T-Mobile has been slowly but surely cracking down on this loophole recently, forcing people into at least the $19.99/ month.  Just want you to be aware, that at some point T-Mobile will make you pay for your internet, if not already; don’t be caught with your pants down!  :-)

Personally, I use an unlocked Dash with Cingular, and I also pay $19.99/month for unlimited GPRS/EDGE internet.  Is it expensive?  Yes.  Is it worth it?  I’m not sure, but it’s hard to give up the convenience of having your email at your fingertips, as well as checking the occasional web page.  But I never use the wifi, so I’m thinking of switching to the Blackjack, which has real HSPDA (3.5G).

Well you know what it turns out David is right, well in a way.

You can indeed access data on any Tmo phone (that is data capable and if you have the serrings correct, in this case wap.voicestream.com ) though this would not (from what I understand) be EDGE (EGPRS) it would be GPRS, same thing just not the same speed.

I tried it myself after debating and not believeing David here (and offline), but just refer to this:

    http://support.t-mobile.com/knowbase/root/public/tm22791.htm?A2L.SERVICE

...and try it, I just did on a friends WM5 flipphone who never ever had any data plan, and it works!

Now yes some of the quote and/or links posted above are not directly refering to this truely free data access but it DOES work.

All: Two days ago, my data transfer abruptly stopped on the Dash. Even though I was certain I was in data-capable regions, my phone would not connect to the Internet. I thought it was a temporary outage so I waited. Since then I have still had no data transfer capability.

Today, I phoned T-Mobile. I spoke to a nice agent named Buncie (employee #1048750). She filled me in on everything—twenty-six minutes of T-Mobile plan and feature analysis.

T-Mobile does not give away a free data plan nor does T-Mobile allow free access to the Internet on EDGE/GPRS enabled phones. The do have a default level “Internet” access that only allows a connection to T-Mobile for downloads, like ringtones. (I did advise Buncie that the T-Mobile web site was not clear enough and was confusing because of the use of the word “Internet”.)

T-Mobile does have a glitch in the system that allows at least some (perhaps all) data-enabled phones to access the Internet fully and without limitation for a certain period of time. It seems to affect newer purchases and older plans. Apparently T-Mobile might have had some form or real Internet access at no charge. Today, things are different and anyone accessing the open Internet on a T-Mobile device has to pay. So with this glitch, once the “system” “sees” that a phone has received data without having a data plan associated with it, the “system” shuts down the data access from the handset. Buncie could not say what the threshold was or “how” the system knew to shut those phones down. She did advise me very candidly that it was an error on T-Mobile’s part, that they are aware of it and that they are working to fix it.

So, I had to bite the bullet and purchase a data plan. Buncie said it was $29.99 per month for their “T-Mobile Total Internet” plan, even though their website said it was $49.99 per month. I simply had Buncie clarify twice that it was $29.99 and left it at that. Of course, even $29.99 is terribly expensive when I’ve had the service free for three-plus months.

But at last it is finally clear. I’m not sure why my data plan stopped this week, of all weeks. Perhaps someone, after reading my experience here, phoned T-Mobile and had them investigate. Perhaps I’m too paranoid. Buncie said T-Mobile wouldn’t have done anything to someone’s plan with a complaint like that. She said she thought it was just the “system” monitoring data flows. Perhaps it was that.

At any rate (...well, at $29.99 actually), T-Mobile and data now have a clearer relationship in my own mind. Buncie made sense of it and she even apologized that their glitch caused so much misinformation to fly about. (I mentioned this discussion to her.) I told her now that I’m paying for data, I hope the system isn’t letting others walk around with free data access. But secretly I know some others might be experiencing completely free Internet access just as I did over the last several months. And to that I genuinely say, enjoy the ride.

I had the same experience. Completely free data for the past month or so (since I got my new phone), then abruptly a couple of days ago (probably around the 17th) it got shut down. Seems they might have just closed this loophole for everyone at once.

Too bad, I was really enjoying that feature. I did notice though that my friends with Verizon do have much faster data access. Made me a little jealous and not as willing to tack on that extra $30 per month.

We’ll see, I’m going to use the wireless card for a while and see how that goes.

Nicole: Since I don’t use AIM on the Dash, I can’t answer such a specific question. I do love the Dash, though lately it has begun giving me fits with short battery life. I believe the fix is a simple battery replacement which can be done under T-Mobile’s 1-year hardware warranty. This is the only real issue I’ve had with the Dash in eleven months. I would recommend it over the Sidekick. (You must realize the two phones are quite different, but the Dash would be more superior than the Sidekick for many reasons. If, however, instant messaging is all you are after then the Sidekick may be a solid choice. I have no experience with them.)

Oskie: Sounds like you need to call and add a data plan to your account with T-Mobile. Your Dash will “see” EDGE, but will not send data to your phone unless you get a data plan. T-Mobile probably lets you browse their site as a courtesy in the event you needed to access your account information, shop for phones and services, or find a nearby store.

I very much do not like tmobile.I am also not very impressed with the dash seeing as i had the iphone.I also wasnt very impressed with that either tho.I am going to be switching to verizon. They have better service, better prices, more features, great customer service and i think there phones are better quality.I have had them twice and should have never left.

Fran The last thing you want to do with your money to is Verizon. They are an atrocious company, especially their wireless division. They embed proprietary software on their phones that disable key features and limit the capability of the phone. Of course, you’ll still pay full price for this near-useless phone. While it’s been a few years since I’ve dealt with Verizon Wireless, my last encounter with them left me angered by their awful support system and pricing.

Now to the iPhone vs. Dash. What a ridiculous comparison! The iPhone is a $400+ product from Apple. The Dash cost me $100 at T-Mobile. Now, I have no idea what street price for an unlocked Dash would be, but I would imagine it would be much less than $400. The pricing alone should tip you off that there are going to be substantial differences between the two phones.

I don’t mean to read into your response, but it sounds like you have had your fair share of phones, plans and brands. I’d encourage you to just find something that works for you and stick with it. For me that’s T-Mobile and the Dash. By sticking with the same company and phone over a long period of time, you’ll save tons of money. Phone companies show you the commercials of the latest and greatest product because they want to lure you into the trap of surfing from phone to phone and plan to plan. You’ll waste a ton of money on fees and phones and bills by doing this. Find something that works and stick to it.

Nokia N95 gives you free internet /data package and has a back end software which enables with your exchange server . I would highly recommend to those who use for business purpose. I m loving this phone, also if you search on google and specifically phones making by China have phones with free data package, dont ask me how is it possible, but it is surely true cos I m using two of them at the moment.

P.S * Nokia N95 gives you free GPS system which I sometime use in my car for directions ;)

    Good luck to you all

    Cheers,

The Dash is an all around great phone BUT… try to stay clear of used Dash’s as they had a problem with the earlier models and the screen bracket. i had my phone in my pocket last night pulled it out to make a text and the screen was fine… i put my phone down in the dashboard holder i have in my car and i recieve a text message next thing i know POOF my screen is cracked, now lucky for me i had Windows mobile 6 with the annoucements enabled so i could still hear what the text message said. how ever i couldn’t see what was typed and couldn’t see what i was going to respond with. i called tmobile… the phone was used so they weren’t going to give me a new phone but…i was eligable for a “full upgrade” meaning 180 off next phone plus any and all rebates.i wasn’t exactly going to stay put with that decision. yes it was a great deal they were giving me after 21 months of service wihout an upgrade through tmobile BUT… i want a NEW dash. so after i got done calling the first time i called RIGHT back… asked to speak to teck support and see if the phone could be repairs… 100 bucks for repair… not bad… but i’d be without a phone for 14days- 4 weeks NOT so good… so i was like well let me see what my other options are and hung up. Called RIGHT BACK AGAIN… asked to speak to customer care… stated the phone has been a pain since i got it… told em i got it from a kiosk place in the local mall. and i don’t have my original receipt which i really bought off ebay 7months prior. the tech seen i added the phone to my plan on November its now april so obvisously i still was under my 1 year insurance IF i would of had gotten it from a authorized tmobile place. LOL the tech was like i don’t see any upgrade from a tmobile store did you purchase this at full price. QUICKLY answer yes. they’ll trhen ask if you wanted to have the phone expressed shipped or standard. it’s a 400.00 dollar phone people scratch the change up and pay the 15 dollars to express ship it.
OTHER then the OEM alarm that won’t stop going off at the same time every day, the AIM that won’t connect 1/2 the time, and the screen cracking inside (no damage to the outter glass) the phone was a tough little thing. i’ve thrown it at a wall arguing with the Girl friend, kicked it across a parking lot, among other very damaging things but it only shows “normal wear and tear”.

This is a great phone and has a butt load of features…. This being my 1st smart phone I was always intimidated by them but this one is great….... As far as cutting and pasting and the note taking that some of you were having a problem with, take a look at this site…... http://mobile.surrealnetworks.com/dashapps.htm...... you should be able to access it from the phone and download from it… There is a program named VIEKA WORDPAD that works great!!! It also has TCPMP and Pocketnester (this is an emulator that plays all NES games from the past)
